Question

Is moss a lichen?

Open in App
Solution

Mosses:

  1. They are devoid of a vascular system.
  2. There are no real roots, stalks, or leaves on them.
  3. Male and female gametophytes fertilize and create sporophytes from these spores.
  4. Because the sporophyte is not photosynthetic, it is completely reliant on the gametophyte.

Lichen:

It is a symbiotic association between algae and fungi in which algae provides food and the fungi provide shelter and minerals.

Hence, Mosses are a type of bryophyte, not a lichen.
