Question

______ is not used in the preparation of hydrogen because it is a strong oxidizing agent.

Open in App
Solution

Oxidizing agent: It is a type of substance that itself gets reduced and oxidizes the other substance.

The hydrogen gas produced during dilute nitric acid (HNO3) reaction with metal gets oxidized because of the strong oxidizing nature of nitric acid and hydrogen gas gets converted into water.

Therefore no hydrogen production because nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent.

For example: 2Zn(s)+8HNO3(l)3Zn(NO3)2(s)+4H2O(l)+2NO(g)
