Question

Is osmosis active or passive?

Open in App
Solution

Osmosis:

  1. Osmosis is passive transport.
  2. The movement of molecules in active transport takes energy, whereas passive transport does not.
  3. While in passive transport, molecules travel along the concentration gradient, active transport involves molecules moving against the gradient.
  4. Osmosis is the process by which water molecules pass through a partially permeable membrane from a location of higher water potential to a region of lower potential along a water potential gradient.
  5. So little energy is required to carry out this process, thus it is a form of passive transport.
