Question

Is PH3 a +m group or -m group?
Also give the stability order of +m group and -m group

Open in App
Solution

A PH3 cannot attach with carbon chain as all the three valences of phosphorus is filled. So it should be R-PH2 (Same like R-NH2 amines). In comparing with electronegativity of nitrogen and phosphorus, phosphorus is less electro negative. So it cannot take electron from carbon chain by Inductive effect. The only possibility is it can donate lone pair electrons by resonance. So the PH2 group will have only +M effect with reference to the carbon chain.
