Is Phellogen a type of cambium?

Open in App
Solution

Phellogen:

  1. Phellogen is produced from the differentiation of meristematic tissue known as cork cambium in woody plants.
  2. It is also known as cork cambium, thus a cambium.
  3. It emerges on the inside of the outer layer of the stems of woody plants.
  4. It forms a typical ring that surrounds the inner tissues.
  5. The cork cambium further divides on the inner side to form the inner secondary cortex and on the outer side to form hardened corky tissue.
  6. The common bottle cork is produced from the phellogen of the Quercus suber (cork oak tree).
