Question

Is Polyembryony asexual or sexual reproduction? Or is it a "form of asexual reproduction mimicking sexual reproduction" or is it a "form of sexual reproduction mimicking asexual reproduction"?

Solution

Polyembryony is the process in which the fertilization of single egg leads to the formation of two or more embryos. It is important in the formation of identical twins. Formation of embryos is by cells of the embryo sac other than the egg. Embryos develop from additional embryo sacs in an ovule.

Hence, it is a form of asexual reproduction occurring at the early stage of development in embryo where two or more offsprings are derived from fertilisation of single egg.
