Question

Is polythene a thermosetting plastic?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  1. Thermosetting plastic: Thermosetting plastic is a rigid plastic. Its shape is fixed even higher temperature ( higher than normal ).
  2. On overheating the shape and structure of thermosetting plastic are disturbed and gained new shape.
  3. Thermosetting plastic can not be recycled.
  4. Polyethene: Polyethene is a polymer having ethene as a monomeric unit.
  5. The molecular formula of polyethene is (-CH2-CH2-)n
  6. The common thermoplastic form of polyethene.
  7. Polyethene can be recycled.
  8. However, it has high ductility, impact strength, and low friction in spite of its low strength, hardness, and rigidity.

Hence, polyethene is not a thermosetting plastic. It belongs to a type of plastic known as thermoplastic
