Question

Is potassium a trace mineral?

Open in App
Solution

Essential mineral elements:

  1. The criteria for determining whether or not an ingredient is necessary are as follows:
    1. The element must be absolutely required for proper development and reproduction to occur. Plants do not finish their life cycle or set seeds in the absence of the element.
    2. The element's requirement must be unique and cannot be replaced by another element. In other words, a deficit of one element cannot be compensated by the addition of another.
    3. The element must play a direct role in the plant's metabolism.
  2. Based on their quantitative needs, these elements are further classified into two major categories.
    1. Macronutrients: Macronutrients are found in enormous levels in plant tissues (more than 10 mmole Kg-1 dry matter). Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, potassium, calcium, and magnesium are among the macronutrients.
    2. Micronutrients: Micronutrients, often known as trace elements, are only required in tiny levels (less than 10 mmole Kg-1 dry matter). Iron, manganese, copper, molybdenum, zinc, boron, chlorine, and nickel are among them.
  3. Potassium is a macronutrient, not a trace element.
