Question

Is sucrose a non-reducing carbohydrate?

Open in App
Solution

Sucrose:

  1. Sucrose is a non-reducing carbohydrate.
  2. Sucrose is a carbohydrate that is composed of disaccharides( carbohydrates that are made up of two monosaccharides).
  3. Sucrose is made up of two saccharides: glucose and fructose.
  4. C12H22O11 is the molecular formula for sucrose.
  5. Sucrose is formed when α−D−Glucose and β−D−fructose combine and release a water molecule and then the sucrose is obtained.
  6. Sugars that lack free aldehyde or ketone groups are classified as non-reducing sugars.
  7. The two monosaccharides glucose and fructose are joined together in sucrose via a glycosidic bond.
  8. As we can see, glycosidic linkages contain glucose and fructose, thus sucrose cannot participate in the reduction reaction.
  9. As a result of the lack of a free aldehyde or ketone adjacent to the CHOH group, sucrose is a non-reducing sugar.
