The laryngopharynx houses a cartilaginous structure called epiglottis. It blocks food and water from entering the windpipe, and pushes it into the esophagus. The superior portion of the epiglottis can move freely like a trap door, with each swallow the larynx rises and the epiglottis folds down closing off the airway.
