Question

Is there any difference between a base and a basic oxide?

Open in App
Solution

Base is one whose aqueous solution gives OH- ions. Basic oxides are one which on dissolving in water gives basic solution. That shows the properties of bases.
For ex NaOH is a base as it donates OH- ions. CaO is basic oxide. On dissolution in water it forms hydroxide.
CaO + H2O ----- > Ca(OH)2
