Question

Is there any difference between sporangium formed by acellular slime moulds and cellular slime moulds.

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

The main difference between the two is that in case of cellular slime mould the vegetative phase is an haploid ameboid cell, these cell clump together to form a slug-like pseudo plasmodium from which fruiting body spores will be produced. In case of acellular slime moulds the vegetative phase is a multinucleated diploid ameboid cell, This mass gives rise to a fruiting body. The haploid spores are produced by this fruiting body when it undergoes meiosis. The spores germinate to produce flagellated gametes which further fuse to form a diploid zygote.

Regards.
