1: Meiocytes
The type of cell that usually undergoes meiosis to form gametes is known as meiocyte. By meiosis, a diploid meiocyte (2n) divides to form haploid gametes (n).
2: Relationship between chromosome number of meiocyte and gamete
The chromosome number of meiocyte is double the number of chromosomes present in the gametes which have been produced from them after meiosis.
For example, in human beings, the ploidy of meiocyte is 2n and it carries 46 chromosomes while the ploidy of male and female gametes is n which carry 23 chromosomes.
