Is Trichoderma a biopesticide?

Open in App
Solution

Trichoderma is a biopesticide.

Trichoderma:

  1. Trichoderma has been used successfully as a biocontrol agent against a variety of fungal pathogens as well as some bacterial pathogens.
  2. T. Harzianum (T-22), in particular, can form a close relationship with the plant's roots and colonize them.
  3. This invasion positions the fungus to outcompete and parasitize other fungi in the soil.
  4. When Trichoderma colonizes its roots, it can stimulate development in two ways.
  5. First, it eliminates the fungi that cause root rot.
  6. Second, it protects the roots from physical stress, allowing them to grow faster.
