Question

IsV3 paramagnetic or diamagnetic?

Open in App
Solution

Paramagnetic: A substance is said to be paramagnetic if it becomes weakly magnetised when it is subjected to an external magnetic field.

  1. These materials typically move from a weak magnetic field region to a strong magnetic field region when an external magnetic field is present.
  2. In other words, we can say that these substances have a weak attraction toward permanent magnets.
  3. When exposed to a magnetic field, the dipole moments of individual atoms in a paramagnetic material interact with each other and spontaneously align in the same direction, producing magnetism.

Diamagnetic: Diamagnetic substances are those which automatically become magnetized when exposed to a magnetic field.

  1. However, the magnetization is proceeding in the opposite direction of the magnetic field.
  2. Diamagnetism is the name of the magnetism exhibited by some substances.
  3. These include materials such as wood, water, some polymers, and some metals.

V3 is Paramagnetic, Chemical name ofV3+ is Vanadium 3+ ion, which has two unpaired electrons and is easily magnetized in the presence of an external magnetic field.

  1. A periodic table is a display of elements in horizontal and vertical rows and columns.
  2. Periods are the names given to horizontal rows and groups of vertical columns, respectively, 7 periods and 18 groups exist.
  3. There are a total of 118 elements in the periodic table.
  4. The four blocks that make up the periodic table are s, p, d, and f.
  5. The 3d, 4d, and 5d series form the d-block, which is composed of transition metals.
  6. With five valence electrons and an atomic number of 23, vanadium loses three electrons to form the V+3 ion.
  7. As a result, the vanadium ion (V+3) has two unpaired electrons, which contributes to its paramagnetic characteristic.
  8. A substance is said to be paramagnetic if the ion in it contains unpaired electrons.
  9. Ions are said to be diamagnetic if they do not contain any unpaired electrons.
  10. The vanadium ion is paramagnetic because it has two unpaired electrons.

Hence, V3is paramagnetic.
