Question

Is VO2 Paramagnetic?

Open in App
Solution

VO2 is paramagnetic, the chemical name of VO2 is Vanadium, and the electronic configuration is[Ar]3dĀ³4sĀ², The V4+ ion VO2 has an unpaired electron which makes the combination paramagnetic.

Paramagnetic: Because of the few unpaired electrons present in paramagnetic substances, the total net magnetic moment of all electrons in an atom is not equal to zero. Consequently, an atomic dipole exists here.

  1. When an external magnetic field is applied, the nuclear dipole aligns with the direction of the applied external magnetic field.
  2. The magnetic field only temporarily attracts matter.
  3. Paramagnetic materials move from a weak field region to a strong field region in the non-uniformity of the external magnetic field.
  4. Due to the force of the field being at its poles, a paramagnetic rod aligns itself with the field.
  5. In the organ located between the poles of the magnet, a paramagnetic liquid rises in a U-tube.
  6. The magnetization intensity is positive, very low, and inversely correlated to the magnetic field.
  7. Positive and slight magnetic susceptibility.

Hence, VO2 is paramagnetic.
