Question

Is water paramagnetic?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Paramagnetic substance: Paramagnetic materials are those that, when exposed to a magnetic field, have a propensity to become weakly magnetized in the direction of the magnetizing field. Example: Tungsten(W), Lithium(Li), Aluminum(Al).
  2. Water: Water is not paramagnetic. Water-dissolved oxygen, on the other hand, is paramagnetic.
  3. In a water molecule, there are no unpaired electrons to show the paramagnetism.

Hence, water is not a paramagnetic substance.
