Question

Is water a semiconductor?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Semiconductor: Semiconductors are defined as materials with properties that fall between conductors and insulator.
  2. Example of semiconductors: Gallium(Ga), Arsenic(As), silicon(Si).
  3. Water: Water has a conductivity that falls between that of an insulator and that of a highly conductive substance so it acts as a semiconductor.
  4. A small quantity of current is created as a result of the transport of ions that are present in the water.
  5. Because distilled water has conductivity when exposed to equilibrium airborne carbon dioxide, it is referred to be a semiconductor.
  6. The conductivity(capability to measure the electricity) of distilled water is 0.05 µS/cm(micro Siemen per centimeter).
  7. When the amount of contaminants (ions) in distilled water increases, so does the conductivity.

Hence, water is a semiconductor.
