A solution is a homogenous mixture of two or more substances.
Solvent: The substance in which a solute dissolves to produce a homogeneous mixture. Solute: The substance that dissolves in a solvent to produce a homogeneous mixture.

Water is a compound because of the reasons given below
1. Water is made up of two different elements: Hydrogen and Oxygen which are present in a fixed ratio.
2. The physical and chemical properties of hydrogen and oxygen are totally different from the chemical properties of water
