Is water an organic compound or an inorganic compound?

Open in App
Solution

Organic compound:

  • The organic compound in which one or more atoms of carbon are covalently linked to atoms of other elements, most commonly Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, or Nitrogen.

Inorganic compound:

  • The inorganic compound is any substance in which two or more chemical elements (usually other than carbon) are combined, nearly always in definite proportions.

WaterH2O:

  • Water is a compound composed of Hydrogen and Oxygen atoms connected by covalent bonds.
  • Inorganic substances won't contain a Carbon atom, whereas organic substances contain several.
  • Thus, water is an inorganic compound because it does not contain carbon and it was not formed by a living organism.
  • Therefore, water is an inorganic compound and a solvent.
