Question

Is work done against gravity positive or negative? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Work done by a force: It is defined as the product of the displacement of an object or particle and the force component along the direction of the object's movement.
  2. The work done by a force can be defined as the product of the displacement of an object and the component of the applied force which is in the direction of the object's displacement.
  3. The work done against gravity can be negative or positive depending on the direction the object is moving.
  4. If the object moves upward, the work done by gravity will be negative as the direction of gravity is opposite of the displacement. Whereas if an object moves downwards, the work done by gravity will be positive as the gravity and the displacement will be in the same direction.
