Question

Is zener diode a rectifier?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

A zener diode is a severely doped semiconductor device that operates in the opposite direction as well.

Therefore,

  1. When current reaches the zener voltage, a zener diode not only allows current to flow from anode to cathode but also in the opposite direction. Zener diodes are the most widely used semiconductor diodes because of this feature.
  2. As long as the applied voltage does not exceed the reverse breakdown voltage of the zener diode, it can be utilized as a rectifier. The breakdown voltage of a zener diode is extremely low.
  3. Therefore, using zener diodes as a rectifier is not a good idea.

Hence, zener diode is a special type of rectifier.
