Question

Is ZnO + C = Zn + CO a redox reaction . why can't this reaction be displacement reaction.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

In the reaction ZnO + C → Zn + CO

ZnO is getting reduced(loss of O) by C and in the process C gets oxidized to CO(gain of O). Also, C is displacing Zn from its oxide, thus it is also a displacement reaction.

Therefore, this reaction is both a redox as well as displacement reaction.
