Question

Isoelectric point of alanine is 6.0 while ionization constant of COOH of alanine is 5.0×103. Find the pH at which concentrations of the given species are same.

[log 5 = 0.7]

Solution

Given, Ka1=5.0×103
So, pKa1=log (Ka1)=2.3
Isoelectric point, pI=pKa1+pKa226.0=2.3+pKa22pKa2=9.7
When concentration of both species are same then pKa2 will be equal to pH.
