Question

It has been estimated that is all the O3 in the atmosphere were brought to sea level at STP, the gas would form a layer 0.3 cm thick. Estimate the number of O3 molecules in the earth's atmosphere. (radius of the earth = 4000 mile; 1 km = 0.6214 mile).

Solution

The correct option is B 4.2×1037
Radius = 4000 miles
4000 miles=40000.6214km=4×1060.6214m
Thickness =0.3cm=0.003m
Volume of O3 molecules at the surface = 4πr2 thickness
=4×227×(4×1060.6214)2×0.003 m3
V=1.56273×1012 m3
P=1 atm=1.01325×105 Pascal
Moles=n=pVRT
=1.01325×105×1.56273×10128.3143×273
=6.976×1013
Molecules=nN0=6.976×1013×6.02×1023=4.2×1037.
Hence option B is correct.
