Question

It is estimated that there is a 80% chance that the customer entering the shoe store purchases a pair of shoes and 60% chance that the customer purchases a pair of socks. Using a simulator that generates two-digit numbers using the digits 1 through 5, estimate the probability that the customer purchases shoes along with socks.
Note: The ones place of a two-digit number, and 1, 2, and 3 represent people buying socks.
The tens place of a two-digit number, and 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent people buying shoes.

Solution

The ones place of a two-digit number represents people purchasing socks.

Since there is a 60% chance of purchasing socks, let 1, 2, and 3 represent a person who purchases socks.

The tens place of the two-digit number represents people purchasing shoes.
Since there is a 80% chance of purchasing shoes, let 1, 2, 3, and 4 represent customers purchasing socks.

From the simulation, we see that 22 out of 50 people purchase shoes as well as socks.

Estimated probability =2250×100=44%
