It is known that the image of an object gets laterally inverted in a plane mirror, yet we are unable to recognize any change in our structure or appearance in the image. What can be the possible reason for the same?
We are externally symmetrical on our sides.
It is true that lateral inversion takes place in a plane mirror e.g. if we see the image of a clock, it appears strange as you can see here.
But we do not get any such amusement when we look at our image in a mirror. That is because out external organs are symmetrically placed to our left and right e.g. left ear placed symmetrical to right ear, right part of the nose symmetrical to left part of the nose etc. So, even if our left side appears on the right and right side appears on the left, we do not recognise it.
