The English East India Company introduced different revenue systems to extract money out of the Indians. The Permanent Settlement or the Zamindari system was one of the most popular systems of revenue collection under the Company. The Zamindars who were the original owners of the lands collected taxes from the peasants, and paid the Company after taking a small commission. In this system, farmers were severely exploited and it became a major source of discontentment in villages.
