The extra time he has taken because of his forgotten book is $8 m i n + 10 m i n = 18 m i n s$
So, he travelled for $\frac{18}{2} = 9 m i n s$ from home before he took a U-turn.
The usual time it takes for him to go to school is $20 m i n s$
Therefore, when he had taken the U-turn, the ratio of the path he had already covered is $\frac{9 m i n s}{20 m i n s} = 0.45$
