it takes planet jupiter 12 years to orbit the sun once.Whats the average distance from jupiter to the sun?
(orbital distance=1.5×10^11 m)

Solution

The time period of jupiter orbitting round the sun is, TJ = 2πRJ3GMs----1and time period of revolution of earth round the sun is, Te = 2πRe3GMs----2dividing eqn 1 by eqn 2, we get, TJTe= RJ3Re3 But we are given TJTe=121, so 121 = RJ3Re3 or 144 = RJ3Re3or RJ = Re×14413or RJ =1.5×1011×14413 by log calculation we get, logx = 13log144=13×2.1584=0.7195on taking antilog, we get, x = 5.242so RJ =1.5×1011×5.242= 7.863×1011m.
