It took a messenger 30 minutes to deliver a message from point A to point B. On the way back he reduced his speed by 1mph and it took him 36 minutes to get back. Find the speed with which the messenger was going from point A to point B.

Step-1: Calculating the distance between point A&B in terms of speed s:

Let the distance be d
d=s×t, here t is time
At first it took a messenger 30minutesto deliver a message from point A to point B.
d=s×3060=12s...(i)
Then On the way back he reduced his speed by 1mph and it took him 36minutes to get back but the distance will remain same.
d=(s-1)×3660=35(s-1)...(ii)

Step-2 : Calculating the speed by equating both equation:

12s=35(s-1)5s=6s-66s-5s=6s=6mph

Hence, the speed of the messenger is 6mph.
