In 1919, on the day of Baisakhi, about 25000 people had gathered in Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar to peacefully demonstrate against the British highhandedness. General Dyer reached the doors of the park with a hundred and fifty soldiers. Dyer blocked the only gate of the park and ordered his troops to open fire on the crowd without warning. Thousands to people, including men, women and children, were killed and injured in this incident.
