He ate the same amount of ice cream as James

James ate $(\frac{20}{40}{)}^{th}$

Reducing it in the lowest term we get,

$\frac{20}{40}=\frac{20/20}{40/20}=\frac{1}{2}$

Joseph’s share $=1-\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1}{2}$

Thus, both will have the same amount of ice cream.
