Question

Janice and Jasmine were each given a piece of ribbon of equal length. Janice cuts her ribbons into equal lenghts of 20 m, while Jasmine cuts her ribbons into equal lengths of 15 m. If there was no remainder in both cases, find the shortest possible lenghth of ribbon given to them.

Solution

Finding the shortest possible lenghth of ribbon that is given to Janice and Jasmine.

The shortest possible lenghth of ribbon given to them is equal to the L.C.M.(Lowest Common Multiple) of 20 m and 15 m, because L.C.M of given number is the smallest number which is divided by both the given numbers leaving 0 as remainder.

The L.C.M of 20 and15=2×2×3×5=60.

Hence, the shortest possible lenghth of ribbon given to them is 60 m.
