Jiya walks 6 km due east and then 8 km due north. How far is she from her starting place?

As per the given information, we can draw the following figure, which is a right angled triangle at B.

Distance from starting point to the final position is the hypotenuse of right angled $\Delta ABC$,
i.e. $A{C}^2=A{B}^2+B{C}^2$ [by Pythagoras theorem]
$\Rightarrow (6{)}^2+(8{)}^2=(Distance{)}^2$ [$\because$ AC = distance]
$\Rightarrow 36+64=(Distance{)}^2$
$\therefore$ Distance $=\sqrt{100}=10km$
