Let they have x and y marbles respectively

$\Rightarrow x+y=45\Rightarrow y=45-x....................\left(1\right)$

After 5 is subtracted from each

$(x-5)(y-5)=(x-5)(40-x)=124\Rightarrow x^2-45x+324=0\Rightarrow (x-36)(x-9)=0x=36,9$

Hence , John can have 36 or 9 Marbles

and Similarly Jivanti can have 9 or 36 Marbles
