John and Sam were playing with empty bottles, John took an empty plastic bottle, turned it upside down and dipped its open mouth into a bucket filled with water. He then tilted the bottle slightly and made the following observations.
(i)Water did not enter the bottle when it was in inverted position.
(ii)Bubbles of air came out from the bottle as soon as it was tilted.
(iii)Some water entered the bottle
(iv)No bubbles formed, only water entered the bottle.
Which observations is/are correct?
Only (i) , (ii) and (iii) .
The bottle in the question is not really empty. It is "air”, that was present in the bottle. In fact, it was filled completely with air even when John turned it upside down. That is why John noticed that water did not enter the bottle when it was in an inverted position, as there was no space for air to escape. When the bottle was tilted, the air was able to come out in the form of bubbles, and water filled up the empty space that the air has occupied. Hence observations (i), (ii) and (iii) are correct.
