John and Sam were soon joined by their common friend Kenneth. Kenneth got to know about the discussion John and Sam were having. He too wanted to share some of his knowledge about air and asked to join the conversation. Sam and John both welcomed him and started firing questions on him.
Sam: Kenneth, do you know about the composition of air?
Kenneth: Yes, I do! it is a mixture of gases, water vapour and dust particles.
Sam: Fine, can you tell us its composition?
Kenneth: Hmmm, I am not sure about that.
Sam: Okay, just tell us the major components of air.
So can you answer the last question that was asked to Kenneth?
Nitrogen and Oxygen
Air is a mixture of gases, water vapour and dust particles. It has many gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapour and even dust particles. The major components of air are nitrogen and oxygen. Nitrogen and oxygen occupy 78% and 21% of air respectively. Nitrogen does not supports combustion while oxygen supports the process of combustion.
