Total number of pencils will be the sum of number of all the pencils John and Jenny have. Aligning both the numbers according to Place value (starting from the right) :

For adding these two numbers we need to add the like terms of the digits together i.e. digits at ones place will be added together and digits at tens place to be added together.


By adding ones, we get 4+1=5 ones.


By adding ones, we get 6+1=7 tens.


Thus, Total pencils are 75 .
