Solution

Let the number of pencils with John at first = xNumber of red pencils = 3x5Number of green pencils = x - 3x5 = 2x5Number of red pencils given to sister = 23 of 3x5 = 23×3x5 = 2x5Number of green pencils given to sister = 14 of 2x5 = 14×2x5 = x10Number of red pencils left with John = 3x5 - 2x5 = x5Number of green pencils left with John = 2x5 - x10 = 3x10Total number of pencils left with John = x5+3x10 = 5x10 =x2Now, x2 = 80x = 160number of pencils with John at first = x = 160
