Joseph jogs from one end A to the other end B of a straight $300 m$ road in $2 min 30 seconds$ and then turns around and jogs $100 m$ back to point C in another $1 minute$ . What are Joseph's average speeds and velocities in jogging (a) from A to B and (b) from A to C?

(a)
From A to B,
$A v e r a g e v e l o c i t y = T o t a l d i s p l a c e m e n t / T o t a l t i m e$
$v_{a v e r a g e} = \frac{300}{150} = 2 m / s e c$
so velocity will be $2 m / s e c$ in rightward direction.

$A v e r a g e s p e e d = T o t a l d i s t a n c e / t i m e$
$= 300 / 150 = 2 m / s$

(b)
From A to C,
$A v e r a g e v e l o c i t y = T o t a l d i s p l a c e m e n t / T o t a l t i m e$
$= 200 / 210 = 0.952 m / s$

$A v e r a g e S p e e d = \frac{t o t a l d i s t a n c e t r a v e l l e d}{t o t a l t i m e t a k e n}$
$= \frac{400}{210} = 1.905 m / s e c$
