  • The population of Sri Lanka consists of Sinhalese speaking people and Tamil speaking people. But the Tamils raised concerns regarding the ill treatment of Tamils by the Sri Lankan Government.​
  • Soon, Sri Lanka witnessed a rise in Tamil nationalism which resulted in armed conflicts resulting in many deaths.​
  • As a result, many Tamil-speaking people came to India for refuge. This prompted India to intervene through an agreement with the Sri Lankan government. At that time, Rajiv Gandhi was the prime minister of India​.
  • India sent its troops to Sri Lanka to maintain peace, but this resulted in a lot of bloodshed of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Tamil militants considered Rajiv Gandhi responsible for the loss of Tamil lives in Sri Lanka.
