Soil: The organic mixture of matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that is present as the top-most layer of any land surface is called soil. It supports plant life in the following ways:

  1. Soil contains mineral matter, organic matter, living organisms, and water.
  2. Mineral matter includes the inorganic salts required for the growth and development of plants.
  3. Organic matter help in providing the necessary nutrients required for the growth and development of the plants.
  4. Living organisms in the soil make the soil more porous and thus more fertile for the plants.
  5. Water is the necessary component for the growth, development, and maintenance of every living thing including plants

Thus, soil supports plant life.
