The spleen is the largest lymphoid organ. There are two regions known as the red and white pulp regions. There are macrophages within the spleen which destroy the pathogenic organisms. The spleen serves as the graveyard for the destruction of the old and damaged red blood cells. The organ acts as a systemic filter for trapping circulating blood borne foreign particle. It is called as a peripheral lymphoid organ or secondary lymphoid organ because it involves in the activation of lymphocytes and adaptive immune response.
