Kavita uses processes P and Q for the separation of a mixture containing iron filings, oil and water. Process P is used in the separation of iron filings and process Q is used to separate of oil and water from the mixture Identify P and Q.
Oil and water are immiscible in the mixture of oil, water and iron filings.
Iron fillings are solids and can be separated using filtration (Process P). So, this mixture is passed through a filter paper. Due to small pore size of filter paper, oil and water pass but iron filings do not.
Now, the mixture of oil and water is separated using a separating funnel (Process Q). It is poured into a separating funnel and then left undisturbed. The denser liquid, i.e., water settles at the bottom of the separating funnel and oil being lighter floats on water.
