Question

Kazi and Priyam want to prepare dil. H2SO4 . Kazi added conc. H2SO4 to water slowly with constant stirring & cooling whereas Priyam added water to conc. H2SO4. Name the student who was correct and why?

Solution

  • Kazi was correct because when we pour conc. H2SO4 to water slowly, even though the addition of water is exothermic, the solution that is formed will be very dilute and the small amount of heat released. this energy won't be enough to vaporize and spatter the solution. hence it is a safer method.
  • As in this process if a person pores water in acid then the droplets of acid will split from the beaker.
  • As we pour water into acid then a lot of heat will evolve since the reaction is exothermic.
  • Since the solution is concentrated enough, the addition of water will be a violent reaction, hence, the concentrated sulphuric acid will splash out. it will be very dangerous to the person handling it.
  • Hence, Priya is wrong and Kazi is right.
