Thyroid is the largest cartilaginous ring present in the trachea. It supports the wall of trachea and prevents its collapse during inspiration. The sagital section of the thyroid cartilage shows that it is incomplete at its posterior end. The anterior portion of the thyroid ring has thick ridge which can be easily felt.
