Question

A satellite moving in a circular orbit of a radius of 36000 km. If it takes 24 hrs to complete one orbit around the earth. Find its linear velocity.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1, Given data

The radius of the orbit, r = 36000 km
Distance traveled by satellite to complete one orbit = circumference of the orbit

Circumference = 2πr = 2×227×36000 = 226285.7 km

Step 2, Finding the linear velocity

We have,

Time, t = 24 hr

We know,

The linear velocity of satellite = DistanceTime

Putting all the values

Linear velocity =226285.724

After solving

Velocity = 9428.57 km/h

Hence the linear velocity of the satellite is 9428.57 km/h
