Neural tube ectoderm (neuroectoderm) gives rise to the following compartments of the eye: retina, optic nerve, vitreous, choroid, the lining of ciliary body and iris. Unlike the rest of the eye, which is derived mostly from the neural ectoderm, the lens is derived from the surface ectoderm. The optic vesicles come into contact with the surface ectoderm which thickens to form the lens.
