Question

Let A and B be complex numbers such that AB+BA=1
Prove that the origin and the two points represented by A and B form vertices of an equilateral triangle.

Open in App
Solution

z3 is origin and Δ being equilateral we have angle at O = 60
Hence rotation about O gives
OB = OA eπi/3
or z20=(z10)eπi/3 ...(1)
Rotation about A gives AO = ABeπi/3
or 0Z1=(z2z1)eπi/3 ....(2)
Dividing (1) by (2) , we get z2z1=z1z2z1
or z22z1z2=z21 or z21+z22=z1z2
or z1z2+z2z1=1 or AB+BA=1
